Three Ways to Support the Abiding Presence Food Pantry
It takes the whole congregation supporting the Abiding Presence Food Ministries in order for us to answer the call to feed our neighbors in need. Now, there are three ways for you to support the ministry:
Donate Non-Perishable Food - Check out the list of items needed and drop off anytime in the bins outside of the church. The bins are emptied daily.
Shop our Amazon Wish List or Target Gift List - Shop online and have your non-perishable food items delivered directly to the church.
Donate Money - Give directly to Abiding Presence and we will use the money to purchase fresh and non-perishable food through our partners.

Thank You to our Abiding Presence Summer Interns
Earlier this month, we said farewell to our Abiding Presence Summer Interns. These eleven college-age students spent eight weeks with us engaging in ministry, building relationships with one another, wrestling with scripture and discerning how God might be calling them to use their gifts in the world.
As we say “thank you” to our interns, I want to give you a glimpse of a few of the many things they worked on this summer:
Savannah spent time writing and editing various pieces. She wrote fabulous articles about members of our congregation living out their faith such as “The Impact of an Everyday Skill” and “They Never Threw Anything Away” as well as a piece featuring our Iron Men Ministry.
Lillian worked on racial justice by co-leading our “All are Welcome” book group. She also created a list of racial justice resources for children, teens and adults for us to share on our website as we seek to further live into our core value of being a church where “All are Welcome.”
Lexy and Katie identified mental health resources to be shared on our website and the Mental Health Facebook page. They researched future ministry possibilities and supported the work of our mental health ministry team.
Oliver worked on the website, designed graphics and created the Sunday morning announcement slides before worship.
Peter organized the church archives filled with pictures, papers, scrap books and much more. He created a “History of Abiding Presence” PowerPoint presentation that will soon be shared with the congregation.
Emma worked behind the scenes on all sorts of random projects we tossed her way. She organized electronic files, supported the launch of our Neighborhood Groups, updated the website and posted events on Facebook.
Scott updated our weekly worship plan and livestream page while supporting our Sunday morning livestream service.
Peyton and Ally helped to lead our digital Vacation Bible School and Summer Camps by packing grab bags, offering “stretch breaks” and leading online craft sessions.
Erika supported our food ministry in every way imaginable! She was especially involved with bag packing and volunteer scheduling.
In terms of a “pandemic pivot,” I think that launching the Abiding Presence Summer Internship Program was a win! As one of our interns shared with me:
In the midst of a summer where all my plans and expectations for my senior year of college were flipped completely upside down, Abiding Presence gave me an incredible opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. I am deeply thankful for the racial justice ministry that I focused on as well as the weekly cohort meetings to grow in my faith, and I look forward to however I can get involved in the future.
Your continued support of Abiding Presence helped to make our summer internship program possible. Thank you!
As we look ahead to the fall, I cannot wait to see how the Holy Spirit keeps stirring in our midst in more powerful ways.

“They Never Threw Anything Away” - The Story Behind Ed Linz’s New Book
In October of 1929, the most devastating stock market crash in U.S. history occurred. People hurried to banks to withdraw their funds, causing banks to fail due to the high demand, which triggered widespread business closure. These events led to the period in history known as the Great Depression. This was a challenging time for people all around the US. Many lost their jobs, families struggled to obtain basic needs, and homeless rates increased.

The Impact of an Everyday Skill
At the wake of COVID-19, protective face masks were nearly impossible to come by. Stores sold out as soon as they resotocked, and families resorted to crafting their own masks out of old clothes, sheets or extra fabric. This shortage of face masks sparked our friend and church member, Louise Lewis, to create masks for others in exchange in donations to the food pantry.

News for the Week of August 17th-23rd
Hello 7th-12th Grade Families,
I hope you all are doing well and staying safe.
This week for Abiding Presence Youth Ministry we will be continuing our summer calendar. The full schedule is below, but I wanted to highlight the Wednesday and Sunday event specifically.
On Wednesday, August 19 we will be having a craft day. I will have paint, canvases, and clay for our students to relax in their parking space and be creative.
On Sunday, August 23 we will be having a drive-in movie. Bring snacks and, if you would like, the whole family! This event will be for all 7-12th grader and families. We will be using the whole parking lot and continuing to keep distance by having students/families stay one parking space away from one another.
Also, I hope you will take a second look at two of the special opportunities for students we are launching this fall - Music & Arts Ministry and Abiding Fellows. We already have nearly 35 students signed up for the Music & Arts Ministry and seven 11th & 12th graders signed up for Abiding Fellows. If you haven’t already done so, please sign your student up to participate.
If you have any questions, suggestions or ideas as we head into fall, please do not hesitate to be in touch.
Blessings,
Mr. Jon

NEW! Music & Arts Ministry for 4th-12th Graders
We want to help 4th-12th graders participate in music and arts this fall! We’re launching a new music and arts ministry that will offer the opportunity for physically-distanced ensembles/small-groups outdoors at the Abiding Presence church property, with precautions similar to this summer's youth group activities. If you have a 4th-12th grader interested in music, dance, art, creative writing, production, acting, etc., we have a place for them in an Abiding Presence small ensemble.
We are inviting families of 4th-12th graders to tap the link below and fill out a brief, one-page survey to help us gauge interest in each type of group activity: AP Music & Arts Interest Form for 4th-12th Graders (Fall 2020)

Launching the "Abiding Fellows" Program for 11th & 12th Graders
For the past few years, Abiding Presence has been involved in the Log College Project. One of our “pandemic pivots” of our Log College Project grant is to launch “Abiding Fellows,” a fellowship program for 11th & 12th graders connected to the congregation. Building on the success of our summer college-age internship program, the “Abiding Fellows” ministry will provide a similar opportunity for our 11th & 12th graders. Read more about this new ministry program and/or apply at abidingpresence.net/abiding-fellows.

Landscaping/Digging Volunteers Needed
Looking for a physically distanced activity? We need some help moving rocks! We’re looking to move all of the rocks from the left side of the main entrance (as you face the main doors) to the right side in preparation for our new concrete slab. Show up anytime! Bring your own tools or use the shovel and wheelbarrow that we have left outside. Move one load or stay all day!
We’re putting in a new cement slab in the rocky area to allow us to put up a semi-permanent outdoor donation center for our food ministry. In non-pandemic times, this expanded entrance area will allow for outdoor seating to facilitate visiting before and after worship.
In addition to moving rocks, we are going to need some help digging up the area in preparation for the concrete pour. If you want to have your name added to the list of people who get notices about property volunteer opportunities such as these, please email the church office.

When Is It Time to Seek Professional Help for My Child?
When is it time to get additional help? This is a question a lot of parents are asking when thinking of whether their child’s behavior and emotions are par for the course, or an indicator of a larger need. In a time like this, it’s hard to know for sure what we should do. Two of our Mental Health Partners: school psychologists Megan and Allie, give some tips on when it might be time to seek additional help.
